12 Simple and Useful Tips for Preserving Fruits and Vegetables
1. Onion
Keep onions in thin tissue paper in a dry, cool place, and they can be preserved for up to 8 months. Thin tissue paper is prone to scratches and damage, and you can’t wear it, but now you can use it to preserve onions!
2. Green onion
Wash the green onions, let them dry, cut them into pieces, and put them in a plastic bottle. Store them in the freezer for a long time. To make cooking faster and easier, with ingredients and spices… you should plan weekly instead of daily; that way, you can save at least 4 preparation times, and also balance your nutrition because you can always balance fish, crab, and vegetables. And you can use this method to prepare green onions in advance and preserve them if you buy too many.
3. Strawberries
Dip strawberries in a mixture of water and vinegar in a ratio of 10:1, let them dry, and they will store for about 2 weeks without mold or rotting.
4. Apples
One rotten apple will spoil the whole basket of apples. So if there is one rotten apple or one about to spoil in the basket, you should remove it right away to avoid affecting the rest of the apples!
5. Cheese
Wrap the cheese in wax paper or cheese wrap instead of directly using plastic wrap. Then wrap the wax paper with an additional layer of plastic wrap and store it in the least cold compartment of the refrigerator.
6. Herbs and spices
Wash and dry the herbs, mix them with olive oil, and turn them into ice cubes. This will preserve the aroma and essential oils better and make them more convenient to use. This is one of the useful and popular tips for preserving vegetables and fruits in Western countries!
7. Asparagus
Preserve asparagus like fresh flowers. Cut the stems, put them in a jar of water, tie them together, and place them in the refrigerator. This can be done with both asparagus and celery. This method will keep them fresh for at least 1 week.
8. Bananas
Wrap the stalk of the banana with plastic wrap to keep them fresh for 3-5 days longer. Bananas release a lot of ethylene gas, so they should be kept away from other vegetables and fruits; otherwise, they will cause other fruits and vegetables to spoil quickly.
9. Leafy greens
After washing leafy greens, they are prone to blackening. Use paper towels to line and wrap them before storing them in an airtight container or plastic bag in the refrigerator. This will keep them fresh for a few more days to a week. With this tip for preserving vegetables and fruits, you will always have fresh leafy greens in the refrigerator to eat with fried or baked dishes or simply eat with noodles in the morning for a delicious and refreshing meal.
10. Cabbage and celery
Wrap green cabbage, celery, and lettuce in foil before storing them in the refrigerator to keep them fresh!
11. Tomatoes
How to store tomatoes depends on whether the tomatoes are still green, just ripe, or overripe.
If the tomatoes are not yet ripe, place them with the stems down on a sheet of paper or cardboard until they turn red. If you want them to ripen faster, place them next to other fruits.
If the tomatoes are already ripe, they should be stored at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, not touching each other, with the stem side up.
If the tomatoes are overripe, they should be stored in the refrigerator to keep for an additional 1-2 days.
12. Use the necks and caps of discarded bottles to store food more securely
It’s very simple, with empty water bottles, just cut off most of the bottle neck, leaving only the bottle neck and cap. When you need to store perishable foods, put them in a thin food storage bag and thread it through the bottle neck, then screw the cap on as usual. The food will be well sealed, without air coming in to cause moisture and mold.
